Reading Patch Club

Our Reading Patch Club is back!

We are so excited to relaunch our newly revamped Patch Club! Staff have been working hard behind the scenes to update and streamline this popular program. Patch Club is limited to AAPLD cardholders and is intended as the next step up for readers who have either aged out of or completed 1,001 Books Before Kindergarten.

There are two levels: Read to Me and Reading on My Own. Details on both levels are below. You will notice that our ongoing reading challenges have some grade level overlap – this is to allow for the different speeds at which readers learn and progress. We recommend that patrons participate in one ongoing challenge at a time, but welcome them to also participate in any of our timed challenges (Winter and Summer Reading; IL Readers’ Choice Challenges).


Read to Me

Dates: Ongoing

Challenge Ages:  Preschoolers who have completed 1,001 Books Before Kindergarten and children in Grades K-2.

Registration is open to AAPLD cardholders only. The program is intended for preschoolers who have completed 1,001 Books Before Kindergarten and children in Grades K-2 who are reading with or being read to by an adult.

Patrons can use paper logs or log titles on the Beanstack website or using the Beanstack Tracker app (iOS/Google Play). Paper logs are available at the Youth Services Desk at both Harnish and Eastgate.

Readers earn a patch of their choice for every 25 books that are read. Patches are available at the Youth Services Desk at both Harnish and Eastgate. After earning their first 5 patches, readers receive a tote bag.  Readers can earn up to 40 patches. 


Reading on My Own

Dates: Ongoing

Challenge Ages:  Children in Grades 1-8 who can read on their own.

Registration is open to AAPLD cardholders only. The Reading On My Own level of Patch Club is for children in Grades 1-8 who are reading chapter books independently. Readers in Grades 1 and 2 who are still mostly reading with an adult should choose the Read to Me Challenge.

Patrons can use paper logs or they can log on the Beanstack website  or using the Beanstack Tracker app (iOS/Google Play). Paper logs are available at the Youth Services Desk at both Harnish and Eastgate.

Readers earn a patch for every 5 books that they read of that genre or book type. Patches are available at the Youth Services Desk at both Harnish and Eastgate. After reading their first 25 books (whether they have earned 5 patches or not), they receive a tote bag. Readers can earn up to 21 patches.

 

Here is the list of badges available for Reading on My Own. Badges can be completed in any order, but are listed here alphabetically:

  • Adventure: Adventure stories are filled with thrilling escapades, daring heroes, and exciting quests! Look for the pirate sticker or the compass sticker in the Junior Fiction section, check out our Adventure Book List, or ask a librarian for recommendations.
  • Animal Stories: Animal stories contain animal characters, either realistic or fantasy. Some animal stories are told from the point of view of the animals while others are from a human point of view. Look for the lion sticker in the junior fiction collection, check out our The Dog Lives! booklist , or ask a librarian for a recommendation.
  • Fantasy 1 (Knight): Fantasy stories involve magical or supernatural elements. Look for the unicorn sticker in the junior fiction collection, check out our Fantasy Booklist, or ask a librarian for a recommendation.
  • Fantasy 2 (Unicorn): Same as above
  • Funny Stories: These are stories with humorous elements. Check out our Funny Stories Book List or ask a librarian for a recommendation.
  • Grab Bag: Choose books from any genre that you would like to read! You can pick your favorite genre, or try a new one. These are our patches where we only have a few or even one of a kind.
  • Graphic Novels 1 (READ): Graphic novels aren’t a genre, but they are a popular format. Look in the junior graphic novel section or ask a librarian for a recommendation.
  • Graphic Novels 2 (Read! and Explosion): Same as above
  • Historical Fiction: Historical fiction books contain fictional characters and are based on real historical events. You can dive into an adventure while learning about the past. Look for the hourglass sticker in the junior fiction collection, check out our Historical Fiction Book List or ask a librarian for a recommendation.
  • Mystery 1 (Detective): Mystery stories involve solving a crime or discovering a secret. If you pay close attention to clues throughout the story, you can try to solve the mystery yourself. Look for the magnifying glass sticker in the junior fiction collection, check out our Mystery Book List or ask a librarian for a recommendation.
  • Mystery 2 (Magnifying Glass): Same as above
  • Mythology: Mythological stories involve supernatural beings and often explain the origins of a culture or aspects of the natural world. Check out our Mythology Book List or ask a librarian for a recommendation.
  • Newbery Award: The Newbery Award is given each year to honor distinguished children’s literature. Look for the Newbery Award sticker in the junior fiction collection, check out our Newbery Award Book List or ask a librarian for a recommendation.
  • Nonfiction: Nonfiction books provide information about a specific topic, like animals, STEAM, or sports & hobbies. Check out our expansive junior nonfiction collection or ask a librarian for a recommendation.
  • Realistic Fiction: These are fictional stories that could actually happen in real life. Usually they take place in settings that you know, like school. Check out our Realistic Fiction Book List or ask a librarian for a recommendation.
  • Scary Stories 1 (Skeleton): Scary stories are suspenseful and spooky, often featuring supernatural elements and characters. Look for the scary sticker in the junior fiction collection, check out our Scary Stories Book List or ask a librarian for a recommendation.
  • Scary Stories 2 (Ghost): Same as above
  • Science Fiction: Science fiction stories foretell a future based on evolving science and technology, often involving elements like space exploration, alien life, and human evolution. Look for the planet sticker in the junior fiction collection, check out our Science Fiction Book List or ask a librarian for a recommendation.
  • Sports: These stories involve sports as a major plot point. Look for the sticker with the football, basketball, and baseball in the junior fiction collection, check out our Sports Book List or ask a librarian for a recommendation.
  • Your Choice 1 (Happy 100): Choose books from any genre that you would like to read! You can pick your favorite genre, or try a new one.
  • Your Choice 2 (Read/Bloom): Choose books from any genre that you would like to read! You can pick your favorite genre, or try a new one.
