Happy Scratch Day!

Scratch-Day-Banner Scratch Day is global event to celebrate Scratch, coding, and kids learning to code! Scratch is a free programming language designed to help kids learn how to write computer programs by dragging and dropping code to create animations, games,interactive stories, music, presentations, and more. On May 14, all over the world, teachers, parents, and educators host Scratch Day events to help young people become interested in computer programming.

Scratch is a great program to play with your child, or if they are already familiar with the program, let them show you how it works. Here are some ideas to help introduce Scratch to your kid:

1tryitout. Try it out! Simply go to the Scratch website and click on the "Try It Out" link. From there, Scratch will walk you through a tutorial of how to use the program. This site is best for children in 3rd grade and up.

2.  If you have a little one (Kindergarten to 2nd grade) and a tablet (either iOS or Android) download Scratch Jr. and watch them quickly figure out how to drag and click code together to make fun stories and animations.

3. Once you have the basics down, come on into the Library and check out a book to learn how to create more advanced projects with Scratch.
